Mumbai · 547 tours and experiences

Mumbai starts at the water.

Ferries out to Elephanta, a morning inside the Dharavi workshops, vada pav on a Fort pavement and the lights along Marine Drive: what each one is really like, what it costs, and where to book it.

First trip, first bookings

What holds a Mumbai week together.

A first trip needs the harbour crossing, one morning inside Dharavi and a plate of something fried on a Fort pavement. These are the bookings that carry all three, plus the ones Mumbai families put visiting relatives on.

An hour off the Gateway

One ferry, thirteen centuries.

Boats leave the Gateway from nine and an hour later you are climbing a hillside of rock-cut Shiva. Go on the first sailing: the caves stay cool under the stone, the monkeys are calmer, and the last boat back goes before the light does. Closed Mondays, so plan around it.

Once the traffic thins

The city changes at eight.

Marine Drive turns into a two-kilometre string of lights, the Gateway goes floodlit, and the Fort buildings look like nobody ever left. Night tours start once the traffic thins, which is also when the good stalls fire up their pans.

Bombay eats on its feet

The best food here costs thirty rupees.

Vada pav outside the station, bhel on Chowpatty sand, a thali that keeps arriving until you put a hand over the plate. Guides who eat on these streets every day know which pan to trust and which to walk past.

The film city

Somebody is shooting something today.

Film City spreads over five hundred acres of hillside behind Goregaon, and a good tour gets you onto a live set, into a dance class and back out with a story. Sets are struck and rebuilt weekly, so no two visits match.

Gothic, Deco, Bombay

Gothic on one side, Deco on the other.

Oval Maidan is the one place on earth where a Victorian Gothic high court and a run of 1930s Art Deco flats stare at each other across a cricket pitch. Walk the Fort with somebody who reads buildings and the whole of South Mumbai starts to make sense.

One district at a time

Every few kilometres it becomes another city.

Dharavi for the workshops. Colaba for the arches. Bandra for the sea wall and the old bungalows. Crawford for the noise, Banganga for when you have had enough of it.

Sort it by mood

Choose the day you actually want.

Walk it, eat it, take it by boat or watch it being filmed. Each one opens a priced, rated page you can book from in about five minutes.

Where the city ends

An hour out and the noise stops.

Kanheri sits inside a national park with leopards in it. Lonavala and the Karla caves are two hours up the expressway. And the Taj Mahal is a dawn flight away if you can give it the whole day.
